Performing…
Blue Ridge Vocal Connection did an outdoor concert for a small audience on July 4 in Bramwell, West Virginia. I think the main event for most people was fireworks to follow us, as the street was more crowded when we left than when we began. but the audience seemed appreciative enough. We didn’t stay for that, but saw lots of fireworks going off as we drove 90 minutes home.
It was an enjoyable evening, although too hot. I’m trying to build my comfort level singing publicly. Sometimes when I feel I can’t match the pitch I want, I just lower my volume!
During the rehearsal to follow, conductor Thomas had us volunteer to sing solo or duet the intro to the song This Little Light. I felt uninhibited since it was, literally and proverbially, “singing to the choir.” We have several lovely voices in our choir, but I thought I sounded reasonably good, and afterwards Thomas and others said I sounded good and on-pitch. So maybe I’m not lowering the choir’s overall quality level after all. Just for fun the next day, Susan and I sang to each other, working to harmonize. I hope we can continue working on this and see if we can do it well.
My mentor Joe has offered to tutor me in reading music. I still struggle sometimes finding and keeping my place as we work through a musical score. So we’re going to set up an appointment to work together soon, maybe this week.
Stay tuned.
